About

The XR for Youth Ethics Consortium was formed in 2023 to address the lack of stakeholder-centered ethical considerations of XR technology for children. Its goal is to develop foundational principles to guide XR research with children. The consortium comprises six universities in the United States (University of Iowa, Boise State University, University of Minnesota, Northeastern University, University of Baltimore, and University of Maryland) and consists of a diverse group of child-computer interaction researchers with a demonstrated interest in ethics. The primary motivation is to develop foundational ethical principles for conducting research with youth for extended reality technologies. Each site has a different demographic focus for stakeholders in an effort to have broad representation across geographies, income, gender, race, and ethnicity. For example, the University of Iowa works with rural stakeholders, whereas the University of Baltimore focuses on low-income urban youth, and Northeastern University on neurodivergent children. Research results will be publicly disseminated through this website, academic journals, and conferences. Support was provided by an unrestricted gift from Reality Labs Research.
