Scene Authoring for Virtual Environments
Project Summary
Driving simulation requires high fidelity, correlated scene databases of
large geographic regions with properly constructed roads, realistic
terrain, natural foliage, and appropriate cultural features.
Scene database creation is labor intensive and expensive.
The goal of our work is to leverage the work of scene modelers by
allowing them to easily reuse database components in the construction
of new scenes. This is accomplished through the development of
a "building block" approach to scene modeling. Scenes are constructed
from prefabricated components (in much the was a model racetrack
is built.) By imposing a highly structured format on the boundaries
of scene database tiles, sections can be rearranged and combined
to create a variety of virtual driving environments.
