Elections in the United States

The County Role

 

Role of the County Government:

    Varies from state to state!
    Administer all elections.
    Election commissioners are elected locally.

The county owns all voting machinery.

    County decides what voting machines are needed.
    County decides when to purchase voting machines.

In November 2000 election in Johnson County Iowa:

    20,848 early ballots cast before election day
        vote by mail
        vote at "satellite polling places"

    32,451 ballots at 51 precinct polling places on election day
