The Iowa Logic Specificaiton Language

The Iowa Logic Specification Language was developed between 1983 and 1988, and was used for many years by various instructors at the U of Iowa for teaching digital logic design. This is a powerful logic description language with abstraction facilities that allow fairly straightforward specification of digital systems up to the complexity of fairly large CPUs. However, note that both the language and the logic simulator were developed before the widespread introduction of graphical user interfaces, so they are purely textual.

  Note: After installation, please run the tests documented with the demo and test data distributed below. Some Pascal compilers produce incorrect object code without reporting any error messages!

  Note: The best basic demos involve exploring the behavior of some of the TTL chips such as the LS00; the register transfer components illustrate more advanced features. This collection is intended to demonstrate some of the more advanced features and to test the correctness of the compiler and simulator.

• C source code for a table preprocessor
• Some documentation for the table preprocessor
  The table preprocessor extends the Iowa Logic Specificaiton Language with truth tables, automatically translating such tables into random logic with the same behavior.

• Notes on Large Scale System Design
  The logic simulator can be used to simulate huge systems, but such systems require serious attention to issues normally classified as software engineering issues, and not normally the focus of hardware designer's work.
